Protection of Children, women, PWDs and other group rights
Rights are the vision of democratic society, and if Somalia is to enjoy democracy, rule of law and peace again, this is paramount. Solutions For Somalia hopes to reach out to communities through mass media campaigns to promote individual and minority group rights. The first category of beneficiaries will be children. This is because when conflict and natural disasters strike, families are displaced and children face much neglect as adults are left helpless. Partly as a result of these displacements, and
partly due to changing cultural values, family break-ups are an increasingly common phenomenon emerging in Somalia. In all these scenarios, various protection issues
become evident. Children witness domestic violence, some become child laborers, street children, while a few turns to drugs. The children face deprivation of food, decent shelter, and medication, a warm family environment with some getting abused physically, emotionally and sexually. Solutions For Somalia hopes to conduct therapeutic activities including play and games, scrap books, storytelling, drama and film acting and counselling.
Interactive radio programs including radio drama will also be used. Mass media has the advantage of reaching out to many people including the rural masses. The other activities like scrap books, storytelling and interactive programs have been found effective in helping traumatized people overcome pain.
This is important as most people have been traumatized by war or natural disasters. Leaving them psychologically disoriented does not help them overcome the anger. In turn, a person with simmering anger or emotional under development is likely to perpetuate conflict at homes and society. This defeats rehabilitation efforts.
